A Legacy of Access and Impact
Edward Singleton, Jr.’s biography is a living testament to Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune’s philosophy: education should be practical, accessible, and transformative.
For more than four decades, Edward Singleton, Jr. has been a steady force behind Bethune-Cookman University’s mission to expand access to higher education. Beginning his career at B-CU as an Assistant Professor of Psychology in Continuing Education during the 1980s, Singleton quickly became identified with the University’s commitment to non-traditional and adult learners.
By the mid-2000s, his leadership was firmly centered at the University’s off-campus instructional site in Spuds/Hastings—now widely known as the John W. Miller Center. In his role as Director, Singleton guided the development of degree programs, coordinated faculty and staff, and ensured that the quality of education at the satellite campus met the high standards of B-CU’s main campus.
His work is not only administrative but deeply personal: Singleton has been described as a mentor, advocate, and bridge-builder for working adults balancing family, career, and education. His stewardship has directly impacted over 1,000 graduates of the Miller Center, many of whom might not otherwise have had access to a college education.
Mr. Singleton’s 46 years of service prove that the Miller Center is not just a satellite site, but a place of legacy, rooted in people who have devoted their careers to its success. Through his leadership, the Miller Center has evolved into a hub where education adapts to people’s lives.
